Comiket, held twice a year in Tokyo, stands as the flagship gathering for doujinshi creators—artists and writers who produce their own manga, novels, and magazines. While Japan hosts countless events celebrating self‑published work, Comiket towers above them all, routinely drawing crowds that have reached an astonishing 750,000 attendees. Naturally, the convention also becomes a magnet for cosplayers, and wherever cosplayers gather, photographers aren’t far behind. The pandemic dealt a heavy blow to Comiket’s massive turnout. After welcoming 730,000 and 750,000 fans to its summer and winter events in 2019, the convention was cancelled entirely in 2020. Attendance in 2021 rebounded only modestly, topping out around 170,000. But by 2025 the numbers were climbing again, reaching 300,000, and early signs suggest the 2026 gatherings may surpass even that. Cosplay, thankfully, has not only endured but continues to evolve, with costumes growing more elaborate and ambitious each year.
