In an interview with IGN, and emphasizing that although the film can be enjoyed without any prior knowledge of the novels, The Dark Tower director Nik Arcel confirmed the theory that the new film will actually be a continuation of the novel canon instead of simply an amalgamation or remake of the existing stories. Fans of the books by Stephen King should take joy in seeing the cinematic adventures of the Gunslinger (played by Idris Elba) as a new path after the written storyline.
The rumors began when when Stephen King himself tweeted out an image last summer implying that this was in fact a continuation and not a remake of the novels:
